Everything is flammable here. Since you can't use magic, please tell me there is another way to see in the dark beyond using a flame?

First step, find someone to live with who already has power.

Then you'll have to adjust the the careful management of fire, preferably in candle form. See the butcher, he makes tallow ones. I think there are beeswax ones too.

Only if you're not careful. Melt a bit of wax onto a plate, use that to affix the candle to it. Or ask the smiths for a holder and a shield. I think we have someone that works glass. Maybe.

Of course it is. Melt down some silcia, or even sand, roll that stuff up, put it on a blowing tube. Dangerous, yeah, but like... That's how all glass was made prior to mechanization.

Oh boy, you're definitely from a different world. Even Bull has machines of a sort.

Yes, metalworking and glassblowing both only require a hot enough furnace I think. Which is covered at the forge. I don't know if Stark would want someone stumbling around who is actually just awed at the basic step of firing coal for long periods of time.

Still, you should check it out. Pretty basic stuff.

sure but it's not open like a candle. what do you have against fire anyway? you're gonna be mighty cold if you try to go without.

all the heating here is done with woodstoves and fireplaces. candles are the least of your fucking troubles if you want to stay alive.

if you want to eat, shower and not freeze then you need fire. i suggest you get over it sooner than later.

Use a candle and walk carefully.

Not that's easily carried. But candles are still an option, if you were looking.
fishingfortrouble: (I found this if it's of interest?)

[personal profile] fishingfortrouble 2019-02-10 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
That depends on what you were looking for it to be different to.
fishingfortrouble: (*honestly*. I *am* trying)

[personal profile] fishingfortrouble 2019-02-12 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Just because something's flammable doesn't mean that it's going to immediately catch fire. Especially not if you're careful with the flame in question.
fishingfortrouble: (setting the scene)

[personal profile] fishingfortrouble 2019-02-15 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit that we don't have quite as much capability to handle a bigger fire as I'd like, but for most cases all the usual methods do still work.
fishingfortrouble: (that poor soul)

[personal profile] fishingfortrouble 2019-02-19 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Have you never blown out a candle before?
fishingfortrouble: (I had been trying to read)

[personal profile] fishingfortrouble 2019-02-25 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no. But a campfire can be controlled, especially if it's something that's been set deliberately. And if you're starting with a candle there should be time to catch a fire before it grows entirely out of hand.

Some things are less easily flammable than others.

You can use the moon to see at night if you are truly against learning to mind a flame.

You can also keep all your activity to daylight hours as well.

There are ways to keep yourself warm without fire, they just generaly involve sleeping with either animals or people and a fair few blankets.

However, fire is going to be fairly necessary if you intend to cook for yourself at all.

have a bucket of dirt or sand ready, or a heavy blanket to smother it.

Do not leave a flame fully burning overnight, and keep the area around it clear of things like paper and scraps of fabric.

There are likely instructional books on it it in the library, but if you learn better by watching and doing I am sure someone can show you. It will be a couple days before I can but you are more than welcome to lessons once I have decided on the bakery to invade.

championofsnark: (close listening)

[personal profile] championofsnark 2019-02-10 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You can smother it with clothing as long as you do it quickly. Or stamp it out. I doubt any fire will spread quicker than that.
championofsnark: (talking annoyed)

[personal profile] championofsnark 2019-02-14 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
We did have a house burn down recently. Whoever has us here helpfully gave us fire powers for a bit, to deal with mice that froze everything in sight, and these things got out of hands quickly. But it did only get the one.
championofsnark: (serious)

[personal profile] championofsnark 2019-02-18 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! They were mice that froze everything they touched. Including entire people and animals. And then you started to suffocate, which was not at all fun.
